I went with the quick brown wash and then wipe off - takes no skill. Slap it on quite generously, but not so much that it 'pools', then wipe over with a piece of kitchen roll. I found wiping worked better than 'patting' suggested above - but whatever. I also wiped the edges of the cogs clean.
then sharpied the numbers/arrows. I would say it took less than 30 minutes all told, plus the drying time between the wash and the sharpies.
My set also required no hole enlarging.
