Just wanted to add my 2 cents as I am in the process of painting my gears.

We used a Krylon brand white spray primer for all the pieces. It essentially comes out like spray paint. Once you are all primed, we used basic acrylic paints from a retail store craft section. Paints ranged from 60 cents to 2 dollars a piece and seem to be working great so far. We're not completely finished with all the painting but we're getting there (some cleaning up etc). The last step we have now is to spray a semi-gloss finish over the top to protect the paint and make it all pop out. Also, for the side gears, we did basic colors and covered them all in a brown ink wash to add that cool gritty look and some age.


My gear is a mix of things others have done here on the geek already with their wheel. Keep in mind this isn't finished and needs some touch ups as well as a top coat but you get the idea:
