About the ink wash::

Basically, you just paint your cogs the regular old way you would want to, let it dry, and then apply a liberal mix of water and ink wash. I'm currently using Citadel Agrax Earthshade:

If you've never used an ink wash before, it basically looks like a jar of dirty water. I bought my jar for 4 dollars at the local game store, but they have it in various hobby shops too.

Anyhow, I just pour a little on to a foam plate, dip my brush in water then into the ink wash and slather it all over the pieces. I'm leaving the main center cog alone as it is black and wouldn't really benefit from it, but on the side cogs, it looks really neat. The way the ink wash works is that is sort of just falls into all of the crevices and gives it that aged/ gritty look. I'll post more pictures when I'm all done with the project but you can google image search devlan mud, ink wash, or agrax earthshade to kind of get an idea of what it looks like.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I'll definitely be taking your advice on the ink wash. So can you apply multiple coats or is it a one and done?
