Don't worry about it, I'm a painting noob too. A friend of mine had to give me the run down on how to do all of this but it really is quite easy.
Yeah, I just painted it brown, waited for it to completely dry, and then applied the wash. You can apply it very liberally and then decide if you have too much. If you do, just take a paper towel and soak some of it up. In some cases you have to go back and add more but most of the time a single slathering will be all you need. When you actually do it, it makes perfect sense when you see how it works. You could be the worst painter on earth and not mess that stuff up (unless you literally pour it on).
As for the top coat: I still have not done that as I just finished all the auxiliary cogs last night. The semi-gloss is to protect the paint and I imagine will take a couple coats to do so. I'm going to do one of the side cogs first just to make sure it works out okay and then go for the big one...wouldn't want to mess anything up.
