Scores below 80 simply should not win this game with good players. (From my 4 player experience). Anyone who thinks any strategy is 'overpowered' because ZOMG I scored 65 points with it and won the game, simply has inexperienced opponents. :)

Actually it is probably down to the way your group play, with less workers there is less opportunity to jump up the gears as they don't get so filled so less actions will get taken during a game and scores will be lower.

I only used Uxmal once to exchange goods before building and only used the corn gear twice I think to take 4 wood and to take 4 corn. The rest of my corn came from taking start player, buildings and begging. 2 of the other players also only had 4 men. This makes a corn strategy less successful as your extra men just end up filling the gaps on the gear but still need feeding (the player who perused it in our game did not win).

However if 3 people pursue a corn strategy it is unlikely that the 4th will prevail against them, so maybe your group will never get to play the way my group play

Just because you get high score does not necessarily mean you are playing better, there are many games where playing nicely, or group think result in higher scores.
