Getting more workers in a 4 player game might not always be possible early, either. If the Uxmal wheel is crowded, this might have to be put off until after the first feeding. At which point, a strong corn player might be hogging the Uxmal wheel.

Honestly, if you're concern is efficiency of actions, tech gives something similar to more workers without the need to feed tech, just the initial resource investment. Your future actions are more efficient as a result.

Temple steps do something similar to more workers, in that it gives you free resources at every other feeding day. Provided you're doing well on the temple and have reasonable tech, 3 workers can do. It's not ideal but sometimes you won't have an opportunity for more workers till 1/2-way through the game.

At the end of the day, 3 workers can be fairly feasible and have heard of 90+ point games via skull strategy. Although yes, I do feel 4 does better and have seen players achieve 100+ pt games with 4 workers via similar skull-based scoring strategies with minimal harassment from other players.
