If I had been the blue player, after Trevor had put his worker on spot 1 of CI, and having drawn myself a blue track advancement, I would probably have placed my worker on spot 2 of CI - only 7 turns to get to the max VP space and a good way to make the opponent reconsider his strategy.

I like this idea of skipping someone on the Chichen Itza wheel, however, I don't think I'd keep the worker there for 7 turns in the beginning of the game. That's quite a bit of wasted actions early when I'd prefer getting techs, more workers, farms, etc. to increase my future action efficiency. I'd probably pull the worker before the first food day to hopefully get extra resources on Chaac and green god track.

In defense of the poster's game group's play, the group combined has less than a half dozen games under their belt. I'd say it might be premature to overanalyze game play.

In regards to the lack of tech and extra workers, I'm not too surprised as I have done something similar, albeit using mostly a theology tech track specialization without any resource track or building tech's. Extra workers are basically extra actions. The same could be said for more tech, free resources from temple's on food days, farms (via free corn on food days), building bonuses (free resources, or even extra corn to let your workers jump spaces netting more efficient actions. Just my 2 cents.
