It seems the most powerful thing one can do in Tzolk'in is "pick a strategy, focus on it". Maybe it doesn't matter which one, but any time a player has gone with single-mindedness instead of playing opportunistically, they've won. To an extent, but as with most games you have to be able to 'go with the flow'. I was hell bent on getting the tech monument after maxing out resource and building techs, but then when two other players made a mad rush on skulls I built the 3-points-skull monument; it gave me 24 points and I won the game.
