A couple of things I found odd with the above recommendations:
1. You seem to infer that a player must upgrade a little to a lot on the technology track. Honestly, the payment here vs. the reward is often debatable, especially for some of the tech tracks. Certain tracks, in conjunction with their reward, seem semi-useful and even make certain strategies (like big corn) more viable.
But the truth remains that upgrades can be ultimately wasteful, especially if there isn't a wonder to transform them into points, and certainly not necessary to win. You can win and never upgrade the tech track.
2. The pyramids are fairly powerful. I will go so far as to say that if you aren't scoring at least somewhat decently on these three, you more than likely do not stand a chance to beat experienced players. Luckily, the other ways to get points (buildings and skulls) also easily lend themselves to positioning yourself on the pyramid.
3. I didn't see anything explicitly saying, "go where other players are not going," which is huge in this game.
