My central point was that you're expressing this after ONE play. I'm sorry, but I'm baffled that you don't understand how that would rub people the wrong way.

I'm baffled how it would. I love the fact that people come here to express their initial reactions to new games. That is the only way we get feedback before they start to arrive in stores. Why does it hurt you if he expresses an opinion that you don't agree with, or even one that he might change later? We're all adults here. We know he's only played it once, we are perfectly capable of giving it exactly as much deference as it deserves. But some of us like hearing what people think, and would rather not have them shouted down.

I agree partially. I like a lot to read things about new games, even when these opinions come from people who only played such games once or twice, but on the other hand I have learnt through the years that first impressions are oftenly not very accurate and that I ended up loving games that I disliked in my first plays. Thus I take this first game reviews with a caveat. But I am fine with them, nothing wrong about it.

Also, it is true that we use to be way more critic about negative reviews than positive ones.

Take care.
If a person has been playing games for years as it seems that don has you can get a pretty good feel about a game after one play. Like a wine taster if he has been doing it for years he knows after a half a glass whether he likes it or not. He does not have to drink the whole bottle

Im just saying that I was wrong with first impressions several times, not only about games but also about movies, songs or even people. The first time I watched movies like Citizane Kane or Casablanca I did not like them at all, but with time I ended up loving them. It also happened with several games like Republic of Rome, 1830 or Eclipse.

However I do respect Don´s review and I really apreciate negative reviews on games even more than the positive ones. I think that we need a lot more negative reviews on games, and when I am planning to buy a new game I always find these negative reviews more usefull than the regular possitive ones. As someone said before this is a website on boardgames and any serious and well put opinion, no matter if it´s based in one or in two thousand plays, must be respected and carefully taken in consideration. Reviews like Don´s one make this site so important and usefull for the geeks like us.

But maybe because I am a bit tired of people breaking the games after just one play, saying that they are repetitive, that they scale poorly or that they have no deepth, like if they have been playing them for years, I always give a bit more value to those reviews made after several plays. Of course, and I underline it, this is not the case with Don´s review that is fine. Also, he does not try to break the game, he just gives us his opinion in a fine way. I thank him and encourage him to keep on reviewing games. But, and this is just my humble opinion, games are not wine, since the wine contained in a bottle is the same from the cork to the bottom, but a game that could be wonderful in the very first play can end up being boring or the other way around. Is the only thing i am trying to point here.

But once again, and I want this to be clear, I do apreciate Don´s review as any other of its sort, nothing against it, nice stuff...

Take care kids.
