With regards to the accuracy of the Mayan predictions, I heard numerous interpretations on numerous programmes over the final months of 2012. Even with the most benign interpretation, the calendar predicted a period of great change. This is in no way depicted in the game.

It is, admittedly, difficult to know what to beleive. Many of the scholarly programs I saw offered different interpretations, so even the eggheads can't agree on how the Mayans would have interpreted things. The biggest problem too is that the most reasonable explanation of all doesn't fill a 30 minute program which why you may not have heard it. The mayan calendar has digits and, this year, the last four digits are zeroes. They simply would have partied like it was 19999.

Even if we want to play along with any kind of "change" prediction, how do you pragmatically define a point of change? We are taught in school that July 4th, 1776 is when America broke away from England, but in reality, fighting had begun a year before that document was penned. There was the Boston Tea Party three years before. When, exactly, did the revolution really begin? Even if we choose to beleive that we have entered a "period of change" the start of such a change isn't necessarily as punctuated as the climax.

My expectations from the media-coverage of the Mayan calendar will be similar to others picking up this game.

I think my point though was that I never really saw the game being advertised as such. They may been opportunistic about the timing of the theme. There were a few jokes here in the forum tying it to the end of the world. But the actual promo blurbs and on-the-box printing made it sound like it was a game about Mayan life and culture.
