I've notice that mine have a bit of slop in the holes and when turning it I tend to push up on the center gear causing it to jam tighter into the upper gears. If I pull down a bit and then turn it, it releases and turns freely without forcing.
Some have been taking off the gear and making the hole slightly larger to allow room for this release.
