Great review. My wife and I love this game, and we've only just begun to explore its depth. The corn in the game is depicted on wooden chips.
In our copy, corn is represented by cardboard counters/chits in denominations of 1 and 5. We find them very practical, as well as making them distinguishable from the wood, stoen, and gold cubes. This distinction is important in game play.
We found the player aids functional, and after the first couple of plays, we didn't need to refer to them much.
There's a lot of symbology in the game, but we've gotten the hang of it in short order.
I like the gears because they make all the game information visual at a glance. I know roughly how many turns are left in the game, and I can more readily synchronize several turns actions.
