I'm curious - what were their grounds for arguing that it was illegal? I can't see any reason to jump to that conclusion. The has an existing iconography for indicating that two things can't be the same (the not-equal sign, as used on the space where you can advance on two temple tracks), and that sign is not present on the the space for two tech track advances.
So what was their argument?
His attitude was "What he is doing is so powerful that it's broken, that just can't be legal." We reminded him that what he was doing took a lot of time, planning and resources to set up and that all of the other players had the same opportunity to use the same tactics.
Nothing like a first-time player tossing the term "broken" around.
