Trajan definitely had a micro game (Mancala mechanic) and a macro game (the overall gaining of VPs). Tzolk'in's gear mechanic isn't as involved as the Mancala in Trajan. So, it's just a method of timing the placement and use your workers. The key element to get your head around is that you must either place workers or remove workers each turn.
